What to Do When Your Job Offer Salary Is Different From the Ad Posting
It can be disheartening when you see an advertisement for a job with the pay rate included, and then your job offer differs from the ad. Here's what you can do if that happens to you:
Mention the Ad
First, you can mention the advertisement to the employer to see if they will honor it. It might be that the party responsible for the job posting is not the same party responsible for extending the job offers. In that case, you can try to take a screenshot of the job posting to show the employer why you believed the pay rate would be higher. They can then decide if they desire to honor the advertisement.
Ask for a Few Days to Think About It
You can take some time to think about whether the lower pay rate is something you can accept if the employer decides not to negotiate it. Employers usually give candidates a few days to consider offers. Consider your fuel costs, monthly expenses, and the amount of time you'll have to spend traveling to and from the job. Don't force it if it doesn't work for you.
Decline the Offer
You have the right to decline the job offer if it doesn't meet your needs. However, you should remain respectful and thank the employer for the opportunity and for considering you for the position. You should react with a high level of professionalism, even if you're disappointed or unhappy about the way that particular employer handled the situation. Continue your job search, even if you run into 50 similar problems. There is something out there just for you. You must keep your head up high and keep your resume polished. Someone will appreciate your talents and be willing to offer you a decent pay rate to use them.
